Files → File Manager is the biggest tool in the hosting panel, built to look and work like the hosting panel's. Customers upload their web site, edit files and manage permissions in the browser, and everything stays inside the account's home folder.

The screen

  • Toolbar: + File, + Folder, Copy, Move, Upload, Download, Delete, Restore, Rename, Edit, HTML Editor, Permissions, View, Extract and Compress. Buttons that need a selection are grey until you click a row.
  • Path box and navigation: a box with the current path (type a path and press Enter to go there), then Home, Up One Level, Back, Forward, Reload, Select All, Unselect All, View Trash and Empty Trash.
  • Folder tree on the left, which can be hidden or collapsed with its buttons.
  • File table: Name, Size, Last Modified, Type and Permissions. Click a heading to sort. Folders always come first.
  • Search box at the top: finds files and folders by name under the current folder.
  • Settings (top right of the tool).

Right-click a row for a menu with the same actions. Double-click a folder to open it, a text file to edit it.

Settings

SettingMeaning
Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)Off by default. Turn on to see .htaccess and the like.
Always open this directoryHome Directory, Web Root (public_html) or Public FTP Root.
Disable character encoding dialogSkip the question about the encoding when you open a file.

Upload

Press Upload or drag files from your computer onto the table. Large files go up in pieces, with a progress bar. The biggest file allowed is the space left in the account's disk quota. A file with the name of an existing one is refused unless you tick Overwrite existing files.

Edit and HTML Editor

Edit opens a code editor with line numbers and syntax colours for PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON and more. HTML Editor opens a WYSIWYG editor with bold, italic, lists, links, images, tables and a Show the HTML code switch. Both save back to the same file. Files over 10 MB are not opened in an editor; download them instead.

Permissions, compress, extract

  • Permissions shows the mode as checkboxes (Read, Write, Execute for User, Group and World) and as a number such as 0644. Tick Recurse into subdirectories to apply it to a whole folder. Folders are normally 755 and files 644.
  • Compress asks for the archive name and the type: Zip, Tar, GZiped Tar or Bzip2ed Tar (the last only where the server has bzip2).
  • Extract unpacks a .zip, .tar, .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 into the folder you name, the current one by default.

Trash

Delete moves items to the trash first; the dialog has a box Skip the trash and permanently delete the files. View Trash shows what was deleted; Restore puts an item back in its old folder; Empty Trash deletes for good. The host can empty old trash folders by itself: see Empty account trash folders after under Tweak Settings → System (30 days by default).

Limits and safety

  • A customer can never leave their home folder; an address outside it answers Access denied: the path is outside your home directory.
  • Every change is written to the activity log.
  • On a demo host the files are real files under data/demo-home/<user>/, so everything here works, including compress, extract and the editors.
  • Files → Disk Usage shows where the space goes, folder by folder.
  • Files → Images makes thumbnails, scales pictures and converts their format.
  • Files → Directory Privacy puts a password on a folder of the web site.
  • Files → Web Disk gives a WebDAV address to mount the home folder as a drive.
  • Files → FTP Accounts lists the main FTP account and creates more, each with a login, a folder and a quota; FTP Connections shows who is connected.
  • Files → Backup, Backup Wizard and File and Directory Restoration make and restore backups of the account.
  • Files → Git Version Control clones and manages repositories in the home folder.
